Stars Strong is a youth-led recovery & resilience leadership development and mentoring program in the wake of the Eaton Fire. The Stars Strong program is for fire impacted teens. 

This Stars Strong: New Orleans LA Trip will include visits to areas of New Orleans devastated by Hurricane Katrina 20 years ago. Youth will hear from New Orleans friends of Stars who rebuilt their homes after Katrina and learn how their community has walked the road of recovery. Youth will experience cultural exchanges, tour historical sites and visit museums to learn the history of the resilience of Black Americans in the South.

Mandatory Dates:

  • Zoom Preparation Orientation Meeting – November 13, 7-9pm 
  • Follow-up Gathering – December 6, 9am-12pm  
  • Trip Debrief – TBD
  • 4 Monthly Stars Strong Youth Gatherings – January thru April

About the Trip

Youth will participate in a 5 day long trip to New Orleans during the commemoration of the 20th years since Hurricane Katrina. Youth will learn about the hurricane recovery, network with young people in New Orleans and participate in museum tours, service learning, and dialogues led by local organizations/trainers.

 

Trip Highlights:

Site Visits: Disaster recovery sites, community rebuilding centers, and memorials.

• Tours: Visit interactive museums and discuss community resilience

• Cultural Exchange: Interaction with local students and community members.

• Reflection and Action Planning: Structured sessions for participants to develop strategies for Altadena’s recovery.
